At UTEP, we leverage open-source software to enhance research capabilities across disciplines. By fostering collaboration and transparency, our teams accelerate innovation and ensure reproducibility in scientific studies. Through initiatives like the Artificial Intelligence Integration (AAII) Institute and the Computer Science Students FOSS group, we empower researchers and students to contribute to global open-source communities while advancing local projects.

Dr. Salamah Salamah
Associate Vice President for Scientific Computing and Artificial Intelligence; Endowed Professor, Department of Computer Science
Salamah previously chaired the Department of Computer Science (2020–2024), leading its rapid growth and securing three NSA Center of Academic Excellence designations. He spearheads the creation of undergraduate and graduate AI degree programs and fosters interdisciplinary research through strategic collaborations with government and industry partners.
Dr. Cauam Cardoso
Executive Director of the AAII Institute
Cardoso drives the AAII Institute’s strategic vision, operations, and external partnerships. With a Ph.D. from MIT, he brings extensive global experience in technology innovation from roles at Visa, Facebook, and Albertsons Companies, and has collaborated with the World Bank, USAID, and UN agencies. He focuses on translating applied AI research into scalable solutions that drive economic transformation and global impact.
Jacob Croft
Director Of Licensing and Commercialization
Croft directs the office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) at UTEP. OTC manages UTEP’s intellectual property and facilitates the marketing and licensing of technologies to industry and start-ups.
Francisco Osuna
Research Specialist
Osuna manages UTEP’s Visualization Laboratory. An experienced Software Engineer, Osuna supports all research initiatives conducted by the Institute for Applied AI Innovation.
